Johnnyc Remus for Olive Song of the South
The film ends with a koda in which johnny runs with his friends, the poor white girl and a black boy who apparently works in the plantation house. There is something in johnny's loneliness and alienation from his parents that, as an adult, i even found emotionally resonant. But this is also an example of a certain hollywood tendency to force black characters to sacrifice their own lives and narratives to better serve white characters. These tendencies were already the subject of much protest by 19 forty six, as we'll see throughout this season.
