I don't think one should underestimate the emotional pull of spiracy theories. They give people a sense of insight. There's a dark secret here which is being hidden from us. I think also conspiracy theories offer explanations that are satisfying. In other ways, they go against the idea of events happening as a matter of luck. So i think conspiracy theories answer a genuine intellectual and emotional need,. That would certainly be part of the whole story.
