Socrates's Attack on Art Is Not a Side Issue
Socrates says that no one should be allowed to listen to music that makes you mell and call you sad because that's a completely useless and harmful state. And in saying how we could ever create this ideal republic, Socrates doesn't actually offer much except to say that if a philosopher can ever gain power the first thing he would do would be to expel all citizens above the age of 10 so that the children could be raised and properly educated. So many commenters have remarked on the impossibility or improbability of such an arrangement.
