In the 1980s, heart transplants were considered too experimental to operate on. So he left boston for northern california and set up a transplant program at vanderbelt hospital. He says it is now the largest heart transplant programm in the world right now. In his early days as a surgeon 'i felt like 85 years' because of what i had been through. His father told him: "You have lost your mind" when he made that threat. The senator went on to become one of America's most influential politicians.
