Do Dogs Have the Right Origin to Be a Dog?
i think there is a genuine ambiguity in english. In one sense of parent, yes, because they function as parents by playing the parent role or their parents. There's another sense of the word in which no, if you mean the biological sense, the not biological progenitors. I think that's what's happening with aristotle and darwin. If we imagine this perfect duplicate of a dog on a distant planet and ask, is it a dog? It seems like aristotle has in mind a purely functional sense of dog,. And so hed say, yes, it is. But if there's anothersense of dog, and which no, it's not biologically related to earth.
