Is There a True Self in Friendship?
Aristotle said that a friend is another self. And i think he meant both that you understand more of yourself in the friend, and the friend's like a mirror to you. Conversely, nita is another very interesting writer on friendship. He thought the lot of friendship is actually ning. The idea ther, i think, is that it is hard to know yourself, even if there is a self to be known. You get it particularly in the dialogue the gorgias where socrates says that the best philosophers are the people that are prepared to be honest to each other.
