The book is written from a historian's point of view, but I do have sort of vague childhood memories of the GDR. People in East Germany often described getting a parcel from their Western relatives and they'd opened it and immediately the scent of the West as they said kind of came wafting out of it. And so these things matter to people and they stuck in people's minds or this ubiquitous smell of warfare set which was used in public spaces.
