The Origins of Zen in Japan

Eku and his mother were sent away from kioto to what's now the city of kadoma, northeast of osaka. At that tender age she sent eku to a monastery to be raised as a monk. Eku was sent to join one of the mini kokuji, or nation pacifying temples, zen institutions set up around japan by the ashkaga shoguns.
