The Seizure of Power, Fascism in Italy 1919-1929

The word totalitarian was first used in 1923 to describe the Fascist regime in Italy by its opponents. By 1925, the Italian Fascists had taken the word and began to apply it to themselves. A key part of this new totalitarian Fascist state was control. This idea that no one should be able to go against the wishes of the state caused Italy to turn into a police state as early as 1926. In the back half of this episode, we will discuss what would turn into the next phase of Italian Fascism.
