The Importance of Reading Local Writers

Gaskell moved to Manchester in 1800, and by the time she got there it was 400,000. The city had a 'seam of sorrowful life going on' which Gaskell wrote about. Her novel Ruth outraged people that Williams preached to - some of whom were milloners. She used their voices as part of her writing but also local writers like Ebenezer or Elliot.
