I hadn't felt that excited by archival material since I'd stepped into the Rothschild archive many years before. As soon as I began to leaf through letters that he'd written to his parents in the 1940s, a diary of a trip to Vietnam in 1965, I was gripped. And so I came out feeling the way I'd felt then, I really have to do this. This is an astonishing story. It is not at all well understood in the existing literature despite the difficulty ahead, I'll do it.
