In order to smooth out the irregularities so you had these things called epicycles now what an epicycle is is instead of having something go around you in a circle imagine that there's actually some invisible dot that goes around you. The first circle is the orbit of that dot around you and the second is the orbit of a planet around that dot. What you end up with if you actually trace out the movement of this planet is it starts to think this kind of curly coily motion where it goes in circles but the thing that it's on is also moving around.
