The Importance of Monuments in Public Space
A Confederate monument, for instance, or the name of a school, you're marking a public space very clearly. There's a historian named Aaron Thompson who wrote a book called smashing statues. She says monuments are not history lessons. They're pledges of allegiance. So again, it it touches on history. And it feels like it is a kind of neutral statement about something that existed in the past. But it's really all about power and shaping contemporary narratives about what society looks like and should look like now.
