The Trade-Off Between Whispering and Whistling
A whistle register helps you when you're communicating along large distances or where the environment is not conducive to carrying your own voice far enough. Pitahan has a humming register which is used as a replacement for whispering because it's like whistling in that you're reduced down to a single frequency channel and amplitude modulation but you can do it quietly. It just makes sense that this is something that develops as an additional way of speaking rather than a language of itself. That's really interesting especially since vowels are sort of fuzzy in the first place. But then Turkish does have what is it like eight vowels that are. I think so yeah pretty valuable to distinguish to have them collapse into three that is
