When you read the books that Lewis Carroll grew up with, those books are very much about children who are in an adult universe. When you look at Alice in that context, and here's a book where the child takes on the path of the child. The child speaks truth to power calls adults out on their insanity. It is absolutely subversive. And it sort of begins a process that the Dodger himself was a part of, of kind of redefining what childhood is.
