The English were well acquainted with fortifications, as they had burrs all over the place. A burr was essentially a town enclosed by a large wooden wall. To counter something like that, you don't want burrs. You want castles. And so everywhere that the Normans went, they built castles. The landscape of England was being transformed almost overnight.
