Serfs in Ukraine
In the first half of the nineteenth century, nearly forty % of the population in the russian empire was enslaved into serfdom. To feed himself, shachenko made ends meet as a delivery boy or herding sheep - which helped him learn to read and write. Aged 14, he became a domestic serf in the house of his owner, pavel engelhart -- where he was allowed to develop his talent for painting.
