Crusading and the Eucharist
There was a dispute between literal and metaphorical understandings of the bread and wine, and particularly the bread. And so stories about the vessel that supposedly held the eucharistic bread at the last supper when this sacrament was first instituted probably says something. This period, the end of the twelfth century, was the height of the crusading movement. The patrons that i mentioned, such as count philip goutier, de montbelliard, jean denell were connected by their crusading activity.
