The historical incidence rate of breast cancer in Japan was and still is much lower than in Western countries. That kind of observational data is great for generating hypotheses, but what you really care about is whether women in Japan who eat soy have a lower rate of breast Cancer. And the observational studies to which I referred are all involving Asian populations and they're looking at soy intake early in life.
