The main question is, do we want AI to develop consciousness? I was interested in Max Tegmark took the view that if we are going to build machines that are smarter than we are, it would be a real pity if they were not conscious. But there are others who would say, well, consciousness is a beautiful thing. We'd like to have more of it on the planet.
