The Third Close Call With Nuclear War That Day
The third close call with nuclear war that day was perhaps the closest of all. A soviet b 59 fox trot submarine was surrounded on the surface by 11 us. Navy destroyers and an aircraft carrier. The sub was too deep to monitor radio traffic on the surface, since radio waves don't propagate well through sea water. It had been out of communication with moscow for days. And it was carrying a 15 kiloton nuclear tipped torpedo, which it was authorized to launch if it was damaged by depth charges.
