What Is the Origin of the Two Lifetime Interpretation?
There is no suta. None of the, shall we say, six thousand discourses from early buddhism that would be interpreted as three lifetimes. So probably what happened was the two lifetime interpretation got shoved in there after the buddhast death. And then it got expanded to the 12 lengths, and the three lifetime models stuck in. It becomes popular in the abi dama, which is 200 or so years after the buddhist death. Then it becomes the defacto standard for terrafin buddhism by the tal at vasuti maga - 900 years later.
