There's a lot of stupid companies that should have barely existed in the first place, let alone been valued at billions of dollars. If there really wasn't a good business reason for it, then I would suggest that is the most likely alternative explanation. The bigger send in that case would be all these CFOs who had a cash negative business and somehow didn't raise liquidity to meet their own liquidity needs. And now the game is up and interest rates have gone way up and the economy's weekend and they're really screwed.
