Venice was a different beast from the lords of northern France. They were a republic who made collective decisions rather than individuals. If they travelled to the Holy Land in their ships, then there would be nothing back home generating any income. The Venetians could hardly sail for Egypt while their backyard was under threat. A peaceful Adriatic was a prerequisite for the Venetian way of life.
