The New England Journal of Medicine's Sprint Blood Pressure Trial

The sprint blood pressure trial got a lot of publicity at that time. And I don't think sprint was perfect, but it provides a lot of good evidence for clinicians about how aggressively to treat hypertension. The following year, the European Society of Cardiology brought out some guidelines as well. They didn't change the definition of hypertension. They kept it at 140 over 90. But the important thing to note is that both make the point that if someone's at high cardiovascular risk, we should consider getting them to 130 or below.
