The Limits of Ingredients

The pallet of natural at the end of the 19th century was richer than it is today, because they were really trying and trying and trying. And then gradually the perfumer said, well, listen, we're going to drop that because it's not different enough from something else. The merit of an ingredient has to prove its strength and power in the composition, how it combines with the others. It can be very nice smell by itself, but not be so powerful once mixed with the other.
