The Mystery of Transsubstantiality
The word trans, joined to the last five tangiality, suggests transubstantiation. The reference being to that central mystery of the Catholic Mass when the priest says, This is my body. And this mystery theme like that of consubstantiality resounds through the whole of this third chapter. For example, on the very next page, there is a passage where Stephen is thinking of the possibility of two priests celebrating masses in two chapels at once.
