At 75 years old, golda mayer had seen every step of the long, improbable journey that had transformed a small community of frontier farmers into arguably the most powerful nation in the middle east. She was an old woman steering the destiny of a very young country. One of her earliest, most vivid memories was the sound of her father boarding up the windows with a hammer and nails shield their family and their home from outbreaks of violence. As she told an interviewer later in life, i can hear the sound of that hammer now,. i can see the children standing in the street, wide eyed and not making a sound, watching the nails being driven in.
