Suleimani used Iran's money and influence to organize militias among his fellow Shiites in southern Iraq. Al-Gluz Force funded, equipped, and even trained Iraqi Shia militias on how to ambush and attack vulnerable American forces. One of their most effective tactics was teaching Shia fighters how to use IEDs. At the very minimum, 600 American servicemen were killed in those years.
