Both sides backed away, and there was no battle. This was fortuitous for the Romans because Pontus was having a difficult time logistically supporting its troops. Had the battle taken place, the outnumbered Romans may have lost. It's a reminder that as much as we like to think that great people and great events determine history, sometimes it can be influenced by something as random as a rock falling from the sky.
