Ethics and Moral Responsibility in Public Offices
In the book, I flesh out what conscience is. And then I try to link it or to show how it's linked to a certain understanding of our moral responsibilities. That once we've cultivated a fairly nuanced and sophisticated set of practical moral skills, we will appreciate the kinds of moral responsibilities we have in virtue of our distinctive moral roles. This picture has significant implications for the way that public officials should look at their offices. When there's a tension between what's demanded of us officially and the moral responsibilities that underline and legitimate the office, we should privilege the underlying moral responsibilities.
