The dog had bitten Bill's bad leg, the one already weakened by his twisted ankle. He could walk, but he was shaking. I helped him across the street, helped him up the porch and into the lodges dining area. The whistler's cries were harrowing, but helpful now. They made us focus on the fear, the imperative of flight.
