Is the Amazon River Named After a Fake History?

Legend had it that the Amazons lived east of the Greek city-states, at the edges of what the Greeks would have considered the known world near the coast of the Black Sea. The fact that Carvajal's story about the South American Amazon's mating habits seems cut and paste from Greek mythology is very suspicious. There are other parts of his description that also seem unusual. His claim that one of the arrows penetrated the side of the brigantine by a span, which means that it went nearly a meter deep, seems like an exaggeration.
