The Flannur: The Man of the Crowd
The Flannur is a man on his own and I specifically use the word of man. Baudelaire in one of his essays The Painter of Modern Life talks about the Flannur as the man of the crowd. He's looking at the crowd around him, putting people into categories and inventing stories about them. So it's an essentially urban. You're not just standing around. Presumably observation is part of the process. That's right. And so what you're doing when you're there, when you're walking around? But what's going on there really is that he is looking for the ways in which there is a Paris underneath what he sees. Is he looking historically
