As an Asian-American in the United States, you don't really necessarily understand your Korean part or your Asian part. Michael grew up understanding that Korean experience through America. But as an adult, he moved to South Korea to live. He came to understand that the ambivalent relationship between the US and South Korea didn't actually begin with the war. In fact, long before American boots touched Korean soil, American culture had already arrived. It came with the Japanese occupation.
