The Importance of Observing Dr. Hoffman on Physical Diagnosis Rounds
The term Icterus was coined by Brian Hoffman, an emeritus professor of medicine. He told medical students on physical diagnosis rounds that it's not the sclera that becomes Icteric but the overlying conjunctiva. Tony: "I wasn't thoughtful enough to ask him at the time and obviously I should have" It would not surprise me if he had read a letter published in JAMA in December of 1979 about bilirubin levels in jaundice patients.
