What's the Difference Between Spring and Neap Tidal?

As the year goes on, lots of things change a little bit. The moon actually changes its distance from earth a little bit because it's on an elliptical orbit. And if the moon is pulling at 90 degrees to the sun, er, so they're kind of sort of cancelling each other out, then you get low tides and that's what neap tides are. There's all these things to do with the sort of little orientation in the system that you have to add up if you want to get a tide prediction. So we ask deborah greaves, professor of computing and mathematics at plymouth university, to have a go at this.
