Self is what has defeated us through many forms of manifestation. These the common ones are resentment, fear, mostly anxiety and harming other people in the pursuit of what you want. We make a decision based on self and it sets off trains of circumstances that bring us misfortune. You can stop calling them your habits because they're the habits of self and self has defeated you by those habits.
