Abdul: I grew up listening to stories about the war from my family. It wasn't just that I heard the stories, it was almost as if that was pretty much all we talked about. The entire generation of their peers had grown up in the shadow of this extraordinary moment in history. And so when I was thinking about becoming a novelist, it was really the only story I wanted to tell.
