In medieval Europe, large scale mobilization and conflict was extremely difficult to accomplish in large numbers. And often wars were waged as a sort of a conglomeration of interests. It had evolved into this idea of mass mercenary armies which in the 30 years were probably encompassed tens of thousands of active troops if not more who were just mercenaries. This sort of mass mercenary conflict has not been seen in Europe for well over 300 years.
