Effective Altruism and Long Termism

Long termism is sort of a subset that's related to effective altruism. The thinking here is that if humanity breaks out of our planet, like goes and colonizes space and our solar system and beyond, I'm actually doing way more good because I'm helping all of these people who just haven't born yet. Even the tiniest leap towards that future, no matter how negatively it affects people now in the present, is actually helping a massive, almost uncountable number of people in the future. But while I could be greatly harming the world and people around me right now, as long as I say that I’m doing it because I'm doing it for technological advance
