The Christmas Gifts of the Slave Owners

Before the civil war, we find a very different christmas happening in the slave holding south. Slave owners on antibellum plantations granted enslaved people up to five weeks of almost total freedom. They also received s usually by approaching the big house, facing this throne of the white family and receiving gifts like candy and fruit. Sociologists have discovered that these traditions were not kind hearted gestures, but instead served as a way to quickly finish up the harvests and encourage good behavior all year.
