Darren O'Neill has written a book about the myths surrounding working class life. He says that people who grew up in an affluent background don't particularly understand what working class people have to go through. In prison culture there's a lot of psychosocial pressure towards those involved in criminal enterprises, writes O'Neill. And so cooperating with it is risable if you're not going to be able to benefit from it - and this is based on an understanding of when you look at the prison system as a whole.
