The word a was translated as carpenter in the new testament by the, you know, in english translation. But recent scholarship suggests that that is not the correct translation of that word. Carpenters would have been called with a bunch of other guys and most likely to be stone instead of wood. He wouldn't make much money from carpentry since they used very little lumber at the time.
