Freud tells us how a young archaeologist named Norbert Hanelt becomes attracted to this bar relief that he discovered whilst on a trip to Rome. The hero of the novel starts to build a fantasy around the relief, naming the woman represented as Grediva or the girl who steps along. And in his fantasy, he also transports the original girl to Pompeii, so not to Rome, but to Pompeii. It's at this point that he has a dream. Now this first dream is in fact a nightmare and it takes him while to understand that he's no longer in Pompeii in AD 79. So really, we're reading Freud who's reading it. I like the idea of
