After dropping out of the University of Virginia, he was able to get a job as a test engineer with rocket dine in Los Angeles. He actually worked on the SM 64 Navajo supersonic cruise missile. After that, he went to UC Berkeley and started manufacturing LSD - though I'm not sure exactly how he learned about it.
