Monkey pox has been around for a long time, since the seventies. So why is it, then, that this particular outbreak is global? One of the reasons may be to do with small pox. Because we eradicated smallpox, that vaccination programme ceased in most parts of the world. And so essentially what that's meant is that we now have a global population that hasn't got high level of immunity against either disease.
