Is There a Rivalry Between Pure Mathematicians and Statistics?

I think i probably would have been quite happy doing some engineering as well as, you know, statistics. I've always been a planner, and so having an idea of what i could do, and that being very clear to me, did appeal to me. And it does upset me sometimes that people don't necessarily see stats as being a proper maths or maybe it's the poor relation of the maths world.
