The Different Types of Neuropeptides

A neuropeptide is not synthesized at the synapse. Neuropeptides activate metabotropic G-coupled protein receptors and usually act as neuromodulators. They are distributed throughout the brain, but they've been most extensively studied in the hypothalamus. The same molecule will be considered a hormone if it's released into the bloodstream but act as a neuromodulator if it's release within the nervous system.
