Malcolm McDowell is one of the greatest performances in cinema history, says Peter Travers. He's so appealing and charismatic that it's hard to imagine anyone else playing his role now. Kubrick was intent on having McDowell because he'd seen if the Lindsay Anderson film "If" The actor plays a schoolboy who gets beaten up by teachers but doesn't break at all.
